Coping Skills do not equal Healing.
Coping Skills are a band aid approach to change. It is not healing. It is a temporary fix.
To cope is to find a way to make a situation, stressor or trauma Ok when clearly it is not ok.
Coping is finding a way to put up with, ease or soothe a situation, trauma or stressor.
Coping is not healing.
Many people think it is.
Healing is dealing with root cause of a situation, trauma or stressor and making change at that level.
To face and address the root cause of pain and express it in a healthy way. To take steps to dissolve and bring resolution to the issue.
Coping Skills can be a useful tool in the moment, and while you are doing the inner work to get to the core and make change.
Coping skills are great when you are in the thick of a stressor, in need of ease to regain composure, clarity and consciousness.
Coping skills give you breathing space to align, regroup and turn within.
But don’t get caught up believing that coping is healing.
Or that root cause discovery, exploration and change can be avoided to get the healing and change you seek.
Years ago, a young woman in her late twenties came to me asking for coping skills to address her work anxiety and insecurities, now spilling over into her everyday life.
I said to her, “Wouldn’t you rather address and heal the cause of your anxiety and insecurities, rather then cope with them all of your life?”
She said, “Can I do that?”
I said, “Of course, if you are willing to the inner work, reflection and implement change.”
With her yes please, and commitment to the process, we began the journey of discovering the root cause of her anxiety and insecurities. Healing memories of past events. Bringing new perspective and understanding to old situations. Examining and changing beliefs, patterns; behaviours. Identifying outside influence ie mom, dad, teacher, friend, minister, kid down the street and clearing them from her energy field +++
While we worked together she did use coping skills at the start, but as she woke up to what was happening within, identifying beliefs and their programs, making inner change, the need to rely on coping skills diminished. Coping skills she did use, changed from unhealthy IE. alcohol, food, fleeing, to being in nature, barefoot on the ground, deep breathing; healthy visualization.
Even when you utilize healthy coping skills, the root cause of the stressor still needs addressing. No more band aid solutions.
Just like I helped her turn things around, I can help you too. Help you make deep inner change to support you in living the life you want to live.
